SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2014

Last October featured 700 of the best amateur racers in the country in 24 classes on one of the nations’ fastest road circuits and not nearly enough people knew about it. The good news is for the first time in its 51 year history, the SCCA Runoffs are coming to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend! This year features 523 entries in 27 classes.

Mark your calendars starting this Friday because one of the best tracks in the country is only seventy-miles from downtown San Jose and it will host some of the best and varied racing in street cars, open wheel racers, spec racers, open cockpit, and high powered race and sports cars. It is considered one of the five major events at the track for 2014.

Have you ever wondered what road circuit race between Ford Mustang GTs, Porsche 911s, Corvette C5 Z-06s, a Camaro SS 1LE, Subaru Impreza WRX STi and a Mitsubishi Evo might turn out? Well a C5Z won, but they were also mid-pack and in last in the T2 class. The T1 class featured Corvettes and Vipers. The T3 class featured Honda S2000s, BMW Z4s/M3s, Ford Mustangs, Nissan 350Zs, 370Zs and more. Would you believe the first place finisher was an Acura TL SH-AWD and second a Chevrolet Cobalt SS?

The American Sedan class featured Firebirds, Mustangs, Camaros and a lone Cadillac CTS-V competing. The Mazda Miata is the reason Mazdas are raced more than any other make on Sundays. There were 71 of them in the Spec Miata class. Unfortunately this year the most relevant of the street classes with the quickest cars called Touring 1 or T1 is scheduled for Friday morning.

Years past have seen the Subaru STi, Pontiac Solstice GXP and Cobalt SS dominate the T2 class. Corvettes are always numerous and good bet for a podium finish in their classes. A lone Ferrari F430 and 360 have also competed successfully. Years back Porsche racing history was made when Wayland Joe won two years in a row in a 996 GT3 Cup Car against purpose-built race cars in the GT2 class. The class rules and competitors qualifying and participation change who and what competes in the each class year to year.

The list of major event in 2014 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca make for a great racing season, be sure to include the 51st SCCA
Runoffs to your must-attend list starting this Friday!
